Orthodontics for Children & Teens

Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages 9-14. Although your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, an orthodontist will be able to detect subtle problems with jaw growth and how permanent teeth are coming in, even when baby teeth are present. This is important because there are some orthodontic problems that are easier to correct at an early age.

Orthodontic treatment for children can be divided into 2 categories depending on when treatment is started.

Interceptive orthodontics (Phase I) is performed to intercept a developing problem. It is typically for kids between 7 - 10 years of age, who have a mix of primary (baby) teeth and permanent teeth. Although some children will benefit from this treatment, it is not appropriate for every child. Interceptive orthodontic treatment will be recommended only if early intervention is absolutely necessary to prevent more serious problems later.

At the consult, if it is determined that your child does not need interceptive orthodontic treatment, we may recommend that your child be kept under observation to make sure that growth of bones and eruption of teeth occur normally. We will monitor growth every six to 12 months and usually there is no charge for this service.

At the consult, it may be determined that your child would benefit from interceptive orthodontic treatment. We may have detected the presence of certain orthodontic and/or bone disharmonies (things are out of proportion to each other) that could benefit substantially if treated early when growth is still taking place thus leading to a better result. Treatment can be timed to predictable growth spurts, which may eliminate or shorten the duration of a Phase II treatment. Treating the problems early will take advantage of growth spurts, minimize distortion to the bone and may eliminate or shorten the duration of later Phase II treatment. Such conditions that respond well to interceptive treatment are skeletal growth disharmonies (things out of proportion), cross bites, regaining lost space in the dental arch, non-extraction correction of borderline cases, severe esthetic problems, severe deepbites, bad oral habits like thumb sucking, tongue thrusting and so on. The typical duration is 12-18 months followed by an observation period until all permanent teeth erupt, at which time the patient will be evaluated to determine if and when Phase II (full braces) treatment is needed.

Comprehensive orthodontics (Phase II) is complete orthodontic treatment performed to correct a malocclusion. It is generally for older kids, teenagers and adults. At this stage most of the adult teeth have grown. This involves full braces to correct the malocclusion, place teeth in their final positions and achieve a beautiful smile.

Kenny Tagliarana

"At first, I was very nervous that the braces would hurt and that I would get made fun of. Now, I do not even notice that I have braces on. They are not painful and I noticed results within a few weeks. I got clear braces, so some people actually think that it is a retainer! I am very happy that my teeth are already looking better."
